Every dog breed has its own unique health risks and prevention methods. Yorkie dogs are a perfect example of this. These little guys can be prone to many different conditions, which is why it’s important for owners to stay informed about what they might need in order to keep their pups happy and healthy! In this blog post, we will discuss some of the most common health problems that Yorkie dogs have as well as how you can prevent them, detect them early on, and treat them if necessary!

Yorkie dogs can also be prone to kidney disease and diabetes.

Kidney disease in Yorkie Dogs:

The kidneys are responsible for filtering out waste products from the body. They also regulate blood pressure and balance water levels in the body, among other things. As Yorkie dogs age, their kidney function can begin to decrease- this is a condition known as Renal Artery Hypertension that can lead to renal failure if left untreated!

Symptoms of kidney disease in Yorkie Dogs:

  • Lethargy, loss of appetite and weight.
  • Swelling on the front or side of their body.
  • Increased thirst and urination patterns that are related to pain relief; this is known as Polyuria!

Diagnosing Kidney Disease in Yorkie dogs:

A complete blood count is the best way to diagnose kidney disease in Yorkie dogs. The levels of creatinine and urea are higher than normal, which indicates that their kidneys can’t filter waste products as well!

Treatment for Kidney Disease:

Diabetes in Yorkie Dogs:

Yorkie dogs can develop diabetes in the same way that humans do. It’s a lifelong condition, which means they’ll need to take medication for their entire life!

Symptoms:

  • Increased thirst and urination patterns; this is known as Polyuria!
  • Weight loss or weight gain without changes in diet or exercise routine
  • Weight loss

Giving your dog more exercise! This will help them lose weight and improve their metabolism, which can prevent diabetes from occurring.

Fasting your Yorkie for 12 hours a day on days where they’re high blood sugar levels are too high. During this time period, don’t feed your dog any food or water.

Eating a strict low sodium diet! This will help lower the levels of glucose in your Yorkie’s blood and can prevent them from developing diabetes by lowering their weight over time.

Giving insulin injections once a day, just like humans do too. Your veterinarian should be able to give you the right amount to give your Yorkie.

Feeding a special diet! The foods that you feed them will differ depending on their weight and blood glucose levels, so make sure to talk with your veterinarian about this if needed!

How do I know if my Yorkie needs veterinary attention?

  • Your dog isn’t eating or drinking
  • Your Yorkie’s skin is dry and flaky
  • They’re shaking, vomiting or having diarrhea

If they have any of these symptoms, you should take them to the veterinarian right away.

In Conclusion:

Just like all dog breeds and even humans. There are certain ailments and illnesses that Yorkies are more prone to than others. Kidney disease, and diabetes happen to be the highest on the list for Yorkies. Remember to think about a good healthy diet, lots of fresh water, and a good amount of daily exercise to keep these little guys going strong and healthy!
