It’s a safe bet that your sweet Yorkie will sleep the majority of the day. Most dogs tend to sleep much more than the average human. Many Yorkies will sleep most of the night and then several naps throughout the day.

How much will my Yorkie sleep?

There are several factors that will determine how much your Yorkie will sleep. A Yorkie’s age will be a large factor. Your dogs’ activity level will also make a huge difference in how much he or she sleeps as well.

Many Yorkies sleep anywhere between 16-22 hours per day. While your Yorkie is a puppy, they are busy growing and this requires a good bit of rest.

As your puppy becomes more active, they will begin playing and napping in between. They may run around and play, eat and then use the potty. Once they have done a few forms of activity, they will probably be ready to have a nap. These naps can range from a few minutes up to an hour at a time.

This may be a trying time for you while your Yorkie is a puppy. They may sometimes get their nights and days confused. You may be sleeping at night and your Yorkie may be wide awake and wanting to play. Try to be patient and in time, your Yorkie will get on a schedule more like yours. Try to limit your Yorkie’s water and food just before bedtime. Encourage playtime throughout the day so that they become tired at bedtime.

How long do Yorkie adults sleep?

Your Yorkie will sleep less as they become adults. They will sometimes sleep from 13 to 18 hours per day.

Many factors will determine your adult Yorkie’s sleep level. Their health, age and level of activity will determine how much sleep they get during the night and day.  Remember that the older your Yorkie gets, the more naps they will begin to take.

What factors will determine my Yorkie’s amount of sleep?

Several factors go into determining the amount of sleep that your Yorkie gets. Some of these include:

  • Age-Puppies sleep the most and naps tend to be less as they become adults. Some adult Yorkies will sleep more if they have health issues.
  • Health-If your Yorkie has health issues, their sleep may be interrupted. If they are uncomfortable, they may have a hard time getting quality sleep. If this happens, be sure to take your Yorkie to their veterinarian.
  • Change in their schedule-If you have a change in your schedule, your Yorkie will be interrupted too. This may affect their sleeping or other habits.

Do Yorkies like to sleep with their humans?

As you can see, Yorkies sleep a lot! In time, your Yorkie will acclimate to your schedule and their sleep will mirror yours.
