The Importance of Pet Insurance For Your Yorkie

If you have a Yorkshire terrier, then you know they’re prone to lots of health problems. Yorkies can exhibit problems from as early as 4 months of age. Odds are your fur baby will need insurance!

The perks of insurance

Health Insurance, in and of itself, is important for all of us. Insurance for pets is just as important if not more so. Before we focus on the importance of pet insurance for the Yorkie, we want you to notice just how important pet insurance is for all animals.

If you haven’t noticed, veterinary bills are sky high in some places! Did you know that North Americans spend around 15 billion dollars on vet bills? Sounds horrendous, doesn’t it? Prices are usually extremely high, this is true, but it also varies depending on the issues, and the location of the veterinarian.

For this reason, many pet owners purchase a pet insurance plan to lessen costs. Here are a couple examples of pet insurance policies to help you understand the process. You can apply these policies to your Yorkie’s needs to choose the best option.

  • Accident only

This type of insurance only covers injuries, not illnesses. There is a Third-party form which covers injuries done to other pets or people.

  • Lifetime policies

This type of pet insurance covers all illnesses and injuries from year to year, when you pay the yearly premium. Lifetime polices also cover pre-existing conditions from the previous year.

Keep this in mind: most insurance policies will let you pick your deductible amount and even how you wish to pay your premium. Doesn’t sound so bad, now does it? It certainly sounds better than high vet bills. These bills can get extremely high according to the condition of your pet.

Examples of costly procedures

To understand the importance of insurance for your pet, you must consider some of the serious issues that can arise. For instance, most vet bills for cancer treatments can be as high as $7000. This is only one treatment, mind you. Can you imagine a whole round of treatments followed by various medications, long-term care and appointments?  These costs add up quickly but can be buffered with the right insurance.

Surgeries can also be rather expensive depending on the condition of your pet. While some surgeries and treatments are offered on a sliding scale or at a discount rate, who knows when your pet will get sick and where you will be. At times emergency services are needed as well. That’s a whole other topic of cost.

Why Yorkies need pet insurance

Yorkshire Terriers are adorable and loveable canines.  Unfortunately, they have many issues. That’s why a good pet insurance helps them to thrive, and most certainly live longer. This is because the Yorkshire terrier has many problems, as I have said before. These problems can be hereditary, congenital or acquired injuries. That’s a good enough reason if any. Here are a few examples of problems that plague the Yorkie.

Hypoglycemia

From an early age, up to 5 months old, Yorkies can develop low blood sugar, or otherwise known as hypoglycemia. The symptoms of this illness are low-energy levels and lethargy, to name a few.  Adult Yorkies who suffer from liver disease can develop this low blood sugar issue. If you’re looking for a temporary fix, you can rub the Yorkie’s gums with honey. Or you can choose a permanent solution or maintenance. This is where a veterinarian’s skills are needed, and where pet insurance comes in handy to cover ongoing costs.

Teeth issues

As with most small dogs, the Yorkshire terrier can have tooth problems. These types of canines are known to retain food particles in their teeth. It’s important to keep their teeth clean, and if cavities develop, this is another problem that will have to be solved by a veterinarian.

Pancreatitis

This issue is not genetic or congenital. It’s an acquired problem. Due to poor diet and excessive fat, some Yorkies develop pancreatitis. You will recognize this condition by diarrhea and vomiting. Not to be confused with Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis, which can cause sudden death, Pancreatitis can be treated with long-term medications until healed. Even though these medications may not be in the range of thousands, owners still benefit from proper pet insurance.

Skin allergies

Yorkshire terriers are prone to skin allergies and may experience severe itching. The more they itch, the worse the sores and rashes can get. Yorkies can be allergic to many things, including bees and wasps, which can kill them. So, with this being said, it’s important to get your Yorkie checked out. As owners, we must understand the allergens and their nature. Ongoing treatment with this issue is best approached with a good quality pet insurance policy as well.

Dislocation of the kneecap

Dislocation occurs during development, when tendons and tissues are improperly aligned. This problem will require surgery at some point but can be treated at home with rest or with physical therapy. You may recognize this problem from your Yorkie’s sudden yelps of pain. This sort of behavior is always reason to get your pet check by a professional.

Legg Pergs disease

This issue is a hereditary one which affects the hip joints. Because of low blood supply to the hip area, the femur bone weakens. This seemingly small issue then causes a deformation of the hip. If you own a Yorkie with this hereditary disposition, you may not notice the deformation for up to 6 months after the onset. This deformation causes the Yorkie to limp and suffer great pain. Surgery is the only answer to this issue. Considering the price of surgery, pet insurance can greatly reduce the costs.

Tips before acquiring pet insurance

There are a few things you must remember when you’re thinking about getting insurance for your Yorkshire Terrier. First, it’s best to acquire insurance when your pet is young. Although you can purchase pet insurance later, you will have to provide medical records to start the policy, and deal with pre-existing conditions.

After acquiring pet insurance for your Yorkshire terrier, it’s best to keep all checkups and various appointments up to date. After all, maintaining wellness is much easier than fixing a problem or battling a later illness. Considering the Yorkie can fall prey to a wide variety of problems, it’s best to keep them insured with a quality policy that makes your pet’s life easier and makes you feel more financially secure as well.

It’s simpler than it seems.  If you do your part by always feeding your pet healthy foods, letting them get plenty of exercise, and keeping important pet check-ups, pet insurance will cover all the rest. We love our Yorkshire Terriers, so let’s provide them with the best life possible.
